As part of the Commerce, Law and Management (CLM) Building Development, the University of the Witwatersrand set out a clear vision: to create a highly energy-efficient building that incorporates the latest technology to heat and cool modern academic offices.
In response, the professional team investigated and implemented two advanced systems to optimise the internal environment— a radiant heating and cooling system using a Thermally Active Building System (TABS), and an active chilled beam system. Both solutions were carefully engineered to significantly reduce energy consumption and long-term operating costs, delivering measurable savings for the University while enhancing occupant comfort and environmental performance.

The innovation and technical excellence of this approach were formally recognised at the CESA Aon Engineering Excellence Awards 2022, where the CLM Building Development received top honours in the Engineering Technology and Innovation category for HVAC Building Systems Design Excellence. Delivered for the University’s Campus Planning and Development division, the project stands as a benchmark in sustainable HVAC design.
As the appointed mechanical engineers, Maninga Engineering proudly contributed to this award-winning achievement, demonstrating our commitment to innovation, efficiency, and engineering excellence.
